This is said to be the deadliest peacetime aviation incident for Qatar’s military in recent years.
A Qatar Armed Forces helicopter crashed on Sunday March 22, during a routine training flight killing six crew members and leaving one person missing, military officials confirmed.
CBI News reports that the incident occurred in a desert area west of Doha in the early afternoon.
Search and rescue teams were immediately deployed, recovering the bodies of six personnel while efforts continue to locate the seventh crew member.
CBI News noted that the Qatar Ministry of Defence described the crash as a “tragic accident” and said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause. The type of helicopter involved has not been publicly disclosed.
The deceased and missing personnel belonged to an elite aviation unit. Flags were lowered to half-mast across military installations as tributes poured in from Qatari leadership and allied nations.
Further details are expected as the probe progresses.
