Inter wanted him back. Chelsea just nicked him. And he’s only 21.
Chelsea have pulled off a proper coup, landing Atalanta’s Marco Palestra in a deal worth around £47m with add-ons, according to cbinews.tv.
The 21-year-old Italy defender has penned a six-year contract, with an option for a seventh, making him the first signing of the Xabi Alonso era at Stamford Bridge.
It wasn’t straightforward, mind you. Palestra had basically agreed to head back to boyhood club Inter Milan. But Chelsea swooped in, bettered Inter’s £43m offer, and — per sources in Italy — put a chunkier wage packet on the table too. Ruthless business.
What Palestra said:
“A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” Palestra told *cbinews.tv*. “We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi. He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can't wait to compete in the Premier League.”
He’s coming off a monster season on loan at Cagliari where he was named Serie A’s defender of the year. And the stats? Ridiculous for a defender.
So, who is Marco Palestra?
In three years, he’s gone from Italy’s third tier with Atalanta’s U23s to Chelsea. Made his senior Atalanta debut in the Europa League in Dec 2023, but it was that Cagliari loan that blew the doors off.
He even made his senior Italy debut in the high-pressure World Cup play-offs.
Get this: Palestra attempted 73 dribbles over 5m+ last season — most by any Serie A defender. Only Juve’s Kenan Yildiz had more in the whole league. His 70 successful dribbles? Top of any defender in Europe’s top 10 leagues. He also won 15 fouls in the final third, joint-most by a defender in Europe’s top five leagues, per Opta. Oh, and no Serie A player covered more distance at sprinting speed during his Cagliari stint.
Former Cagliari sporting director Guido Angelozzi, who signed him last summer, told *cbinews.tv* there was “strong competition from across Italy and Europe” to get him. “The first thing that struck me was his maturity. He is a very curious young man — always willing to listen, yet with a strong personality,” Angelozzi said. “He trained with intensity and constantly sought to improve. He is polite, level-headed and very serious about his daily work.”
Angelozzi added: “Marco combines technical quality with footballing intelligence. He has a great sense of timing, the ability to read situations and a natural ease in making decisions under pressure — qualities that are rare at his age… If he maintains this mindset, I believe he has all the qualities to build a top-level career.”
What’s next for Chelsea?
Chelsea’s recruitment drive isn’t done. A centre-back is the priority, with Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix expected to be top of the list. Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria is also in the conversation.
They’ve had an £8m bid for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka knocked back — he played under Alonso at Leverkusen, funnily enough.
Deals are already agreed for striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting. Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco is expected to complete his move too.
The Blues are still eyeing a central midfielder and a versatile forward, but that’ll depend on outgoings. After finishing 10th and missing out on Europe, the squad could be shaken up. Enzo Fernandez wants out and Real Madrid are keen. Como have held talks for Trevoh Chalobah. And the futures of Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto and Tosin Adarabioyo are all up in the air.
Palestra’s arrival might be a tactical clue too. He can play full-back, wing-back, or even central midfield where he started his career. Alonso used a back three to win the Bundesliga with Leverkusen in 2024… could we see it at the Bridge?
Chelsea tracked him for over a year. They beat Inter, fended off Juventus, Napoli and Roma, and convinced Atalanta to sell. That’s a statement.
