Fancy swapping malaria for a good night’s sleep? Osun’s got you covered – literally – with nearly 3 million new mosquito nets heading to doorsteps across the state.
Right, here’s the gist from cbinews.tv: Osun State is kicking off a massive giveaway of 2,897,443 insecticide-treated mosquito nets. The whole point? To boot malaria out of as many homes as possible.
This isn’t a solo effort. The Osun State Government has teamed up with the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Catholic Relief Services, Society for Family Health, and other partners, with the Global Fund Malaria footing the bill.
Chatting with journalists in Osogbo on Tuesday, campaign Logistics Advisor Simeon Ibvori explained that these new nets are here to replace the ones handed out back in 2023.
At the moment, the nets are being moved from the state warehouse to local government stores, and from there they’ll hit distribution hubs across Osun. Rural wards – where malaria risk is still sky-high – are getting special focus.
Ibvori broke it down: “A total of 2,897,443 ITNs will be distributed to the people of Osun State. The goal of this mass campaign is simple – one bed net for every two people to sleep under.
“We run every three years, so this round replaces what we gave out in 2023. Once you collect your net, don’t just hang it straight away. Air it out in the shade for 24 hours first, then you’re good to sleep under it.”
He didn’t mince words about why it matters: “I’m appealing to everyone in Osun – once distribution starts, go and collect your net. This is about swapping out the old ones for fresh protection. And just to be clear, these nets are for using, not selling. They’re completely free.
“Also, please give the health workers some respect while they’re distributing. They’ve been properly trained and know their stuff.”
For context, Osun handed out about 3.68 million nets in 2023. According to Dr Olufemi Oroge, Osun State Manager for the Malaria Elimination Programme, over 200 million nets have been distributed nationwide since the programme began. He shared this at a 1-day campaign session with media folks, put together by the Society for Family Health and the Osun Ministry of Health. Oh, and those nets? They last anywhere from one to four years.
