She joined the party to run, only to be told there will be no race. Now Aisha Yesufu is pulling out — but she wants her supporters to look beyond the Senate.

Activist Aisha Yesufu has officially withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory, just weeks after declaring her ambition.

In a statement on Friday, she confirmed the party simply isn't holding primaries for the FCT Senate seat. Her words: “Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!”

It is a sharp U-turn. Yesufu only announced her interest on 6 May after dumping the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC, saying the move was about aligning with a clearer leadership vision. Now that door has closed for 2027.

Rather than protest, she's telling her base to chill. She urged everyone to “remain calm and focus on the bigger picture which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” and thanked the #AishaForSenate crew for their energy and commitment.

She's not disappearing from the FCT though. Yesufu says she will be touring all six area councils in the coming week, “God willing”, to thank residents personally and keep pushing for what she calls a #BetterFCT.

The timing has fuelled talk in Abuja political circles. There has been quiet speculation that the NDC had already ceded the ticket to Amanda Pam, a long-standing party aspirant, but the party itself hasn't confirmed anything yet.

Bottom line: no primary, no candidacy. For now, the activist is parking her Senate ambition and redirecting her organising power towards the presidential contest in 2027.
