Fancy watching history being made from the stands? The 2026 World Cup just pulled it off — and there are still 48 games to go.
As reported by cbinews.tv, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially the biggest ever when it comes to bums on seats. It’s already beaten the old record of nearly 3.6 million fans that was set back in 1994, also in the United States.
The moment actually happened during the second half of Germany vs Ecuador in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The big screens flashed up the new number — 3,605,357 — and the crowd absolutely loved it. Cue the cheers FIFA World Cup.
FIFA jumped on X on Friday to celebrate: “@FIFAWorldCup 2026 is the highest attended tournament in history!”
And here’s the wild part — we’re only just getting started. There are still 48 matches left in this expanded tournament. Back in 1994 they only played 52 games total, so this new record is going to be obliterated by the time the final whistle blows.
Stadiums have been packed too. We’re talking more than 99% occupancy on average, which shows just how massive the demand is. That’s despite a few grumbles about ticket prices and travel faff.
Sports economist Victor Matheson from the College of the Holy Cross reckons pricey tickets and travel rules under the Trump administration might have kept some fans away. But Dan Rascher, over at the University of San Francisco, isn’t buying that it dented demand. His take? “Americans want to be there for the big moments.” And clearly, they’ve turned up.
