More heartbreak on the Mediterranean, as Libyan authorities recover the bodies of 15 migrants near Tobruk after yet another deadly crossing attempt.
The bodies of at least 15 migrants, including a young girl, have washed ashore along Libya’s eastern Mediterranean coast over the past week after their boat is believed to have capsized, cbinews.tv reports.
Security, navy and medical sources told reporters on Saturday that the vessel was carrying around 61 people. That figure came from 10 survivors who made it out alive, a navy source said.
The bodies were found scattered along several points on the coastline of Tobruk, a city close to the Egyptian border. Two security officials confirmed that the remains were badly decomposed and warned that more bodies could still turn up.
Images shared on Facebook by the Tobruk Red Crescent showed volunteers in white hazmat suits recovering bodies from rocky shorelines and placing them into white plastic bags.
Since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has become a key transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty. Many risk the dangerous journey across the desert and then the Mediterranean in hopes of reaching Europe. The country’s oil-dependent economy also attracts impoverished migrants looking for work.
In a separate incident, the Emergency Medicine and Support Centre in Khumas city, which runs under the health ministry in Tripoli, said its medics treated 13 migrants after their boat capsized off the coast.
