Fourteen elephants of different ages and sexes were found dead across the Amboseli ecosystem, and no one yet knows why. This is Kenya's most baffling wildlife mystery in decades.
In a truly shocking development, an urgent investigation is underway in southern Kenya after 14 elephants were found dead near the world-famous Amboseli National Park.
You would be forgiven for thinking the worst, but officials say this is not poaching. Not this time.
The Kenya Wildlife Service said wildlife experts are on the ground examining the carcasses, with tissue samples already rushed to laboratories to find out if this was disease, poisoning or something else entirely.
And here is what makes it so strange: the bodies were not found together. According to KWS head of communication Duncan Wanyama, they were scattered 15km to 30km outside the park boundaries, and they include bulls, cows and youngsters. So it is not just one family group that has been affected.
For Amboseli, this is unheard of. The park and its surrounds, the vast Amboseli ecosystem that straddles the Kenyan Tanzanian border, is a conservation success story, famous for cracking down on poaching. Officials say they have not seen deaths on this scale in decades.
Right now, KWS says there is no single cause to point the finger at, and they are keeping all options open.
To put it in perspective, the Amboseli Trust for Elephants estimates more than 2,000 elephants were roaming the ecosystem as of 2025. Losing 14 so suddenly has left rangers and conservationists deeply worried.
