This is absolutely heartbreaking news coming out of the northwest today.
At least 12 people have been killed, and several women and children abducted after heavily armed men stormed a village in Sokoto State in a terrifying night attack, witnesses have confirmed.
Cbinews.tv reports that the gunmen invaded Lajinge village around 11 pm on Saturday and unleashed terror until about 3 am on Sunday.
One resident said six members of one family were burnt to death after the attackers set their house on fire.
"They killed at least 12 people, injured four others, abducted women and children after rustling many livestock," resident Auwal Hassan confirmed by phone.
The region has seen a surge in attacks by heavily armed gangs, locally known as bandits, who raid villages, kidnap for ransom and steal livestock.
Sokoto police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai said officers are investigating and will provide updates later.
The attack comes just a week after bandits killed at least 24 farmers in neighbouring Zamfara State.
