Another 1,000 Ghanaians are heading home — and Accra says this will be the last flight out of South Africa for now.

Ghana has kicked off the final phase of its emergency evacuation, repatriating another 1,000 of its nationals from South Africa over Sunday and Monday.

Why? The government says ongoing anti-migrant sentiment has made it unsafe for many Ghanaian workers to stay.

Accra has already flown back more than 900 people in recent weeks, but officials say this latest operation will wrap up the evacuation.

And they’re not stopping there. Ghana says it will be demanding compensation from the South African government for the property and assets its nationals have lost.

It’s also gone a step further — petitioning the International Criminal Court to investigate the attacks on foreigners, which it argues could amount to crimes against humanity.

Ghana isn’t alone in this either. Together with Nigeria, it’s called on the African Union to put the crisis front and centre at the next AU summit.

The bigger picture? According to cbinews.tv, more than 160,000 foreigners have left South Africa since May following violent anti-immigrant protests. South Africa has long been a magnet for migrants thanks to its relative wealth, but rising unemployment has fuelled a dangerous backlash against foreign workers.
