Four people are dead and dozens injured after a train derailed near Agbor.
The Federal Government has confirmed that four people died and 24 others were seriously injured when a train crashed along the Warri to Itakpe rail line near Agbor, Delta State, cbinews.tv reports.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation released the details on Tuesday in a statement from the Federal Ministry of Transportation. It was signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Funsho Adebiyi.
Early findings show the accident was severe. Four coaches capsized and another one derailed during the incident. The ministry said the crash claimed four lives. That includes two adult females, one adult male, and an infant passenger.
The train was carrying 442 booked passengers. There were also 40 crew members, security personnel and other service providers on board.
Rescue teams moved in straight away. They got support from relevant agencies and the Delta State Government. As of the statement’s release, 24 passengers had serious injuries. Several others had varying degrees of injuries and are getting medical care. One NRC staff member suffered a traumatic limb injury but is now stable and receiving treatment.
The ministry sent condolences to the families of those who died. It also confirmed that the full passenger manifest has been retrieved to help with identification and documentation. That list will be made available to the proper authorities on request. Efforts are still underway to identify all the injured and deceased.
An investigation into what caused the crash has already started. The ministry said it will keep working to account for every passenger and support those affected.
The derailment happened on Monday near Agbor. Emergency teams were deployed quickly to help passengers and assess the scene as rescue operations got going.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has also reacted. He sent condolences to the victims’ families and directed state officials to help with the rescue efforts. He called the incident tragic and promised that the state government will keep supporting survivors in hospital.
