It was meant to be a routine trip home. On Monday, the Warri–Itakpe line turned into a scene of chaos near Agbor, Delta State.
Look, the Federal Government has now put numbers to the tragedy. The Nigerian Railway Corporation says four coaches capsized and one more derailed along the Warri–Itakpe Train Service corridor. Four people did not make it, two adult females, one adult male, and one infant passenger. Another 24 passengers are recorded with serious injuries, and several others are being treated for varying degrees of hurt.
It was a packed service. The NRC's statement, signed by Permanent Secretary Funsho Adebiyi, notes 442 passengers were booked, plus 40 crew members, security personnel and third-party service providers on board. That's 482 people in total travelling that afternoon.
Rescue was swift but grim. With support from the Delta State Government, NEMA, FRSC, the Police, Civil Defence and local authorities, evacuation operations were activated immediately and were finalised by 6:30 p.m. Injured passengers were taken to medical facilities in Agbor for treatment.
There were some familiar names on the manifest too. Senator representing Delta Central, Ede Dafinone, and former Delta SSG Hon. Patrick Ukah were both on board. One NRC staff member suffered a traumatic limb injury but is now reported to be in a stable condition.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has described it as tragic and heartbreaking, saying the derailment in Agbor claimed four lives and left several passengers injured. He directed commissioners and local council chairmen to supervise rescue efforts and commended security agencies for their quick intervention.
The NRC says the full onboard manifest has been retrieved, efforts are ongoing to identify all victims properly, and a full investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced.
The Ministry and the Corporation have extended deepest condolences to the families, and asked for prayers for the quick recovery of the injured.
