To mark World Hand Washing day, UNICEF has raised awareness in schools and communities...

In commemoration of the World hand washing day, the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, raised concerns over the poor state of hygiene facilities in schools and communities across Borno State.

According to UNICEF, the Northeast ranks second lowest in handwashing awareness, with only 8 percent of the population skilled in proper handwashing techniques.

In Borno, just 14 percent of households have access to basic handwashing facilities, while only 20 percent of schools are equipped with hygiene infrastructure.

UNICEF’s Chief of Maiduguri Field Office, Marie Marcos, emphasized that regular hand washing reduces the risks of diarrhea, respiratory infections, cholera, Ebola, smallpox, and even COVID-19.

She called on government, schools, health centres, workplaces, and households to adopt hand washing as a culture of cleanliness.

The Global Hand washing Day, celebrated each year on October 15, highlights the importance of hand washing with soap and water, especially during key times throughout the day.
