Police on Monday morning disperse #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protesters with teargas and gunfire...
A video circulating on social media on Monday captured human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, and other organisers of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest fleeing as security operatives fired shots to disperse demonstrators.
CBI News reports that the footage shows Sowore and several protesters running frantically as gunfire rang out, with security personnel closing in on the protest ground.
A combined teams of police and military officers arrived at the location as early as 7 a.m. and immediately took control of the protest area. Their presence escalated tensions, forcing protesters to scatter before the march could proceed.
Organisers had announced plans to march peacefully to Aso Rock Villa to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The demonstration had earlier survived a legal attempt by the police to stop it, after the Federal High Court in Abuja declined to issue an ex parte order halting the rally.
