This marks yet another major grid failure in recent months.
A fresh system collapse on the national grid has left the entire South-East geopolitical zone—comprising Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi states—without electricity.
CBI News reports that the blackout, which began late Thursday evening, has disrupted businesses, households, hospitals, and essential services across the region. Residents report that power supply from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has been completely cut off, with no indication of imminent restoration.
CBI News reports that the blackout has raised fresh concerns over the reliability and stability of Nigeria's power infrastructure. Industry experts attribute recurring collapses to ageing transmission equipment, vandalism, overloading, and inadequate generation capacity.
EEDC officials confirmed the outage is linked to a national grid incident but could not provide a timeline for restoration. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is yet to issue an official statement on the cause or expected recovery time.
Angry residents and business owners have taken to social media to express frustration, with many calling for urgent reforms in the power sector. The South-East blackout adds to the growing list of regional and national disruptions that continue to hamper economic activities in Africa's most populous nation.
