Big moves at Seplat Energy — a billionaire boardroom shake-up and a homegrown CEO are set to steer Nigeria’s oil giant into 2027.
Some proper boardroom fireworks at Seplat Energy this week. The dual-listed oil and gas firm has named billionaire investor Tony Elumelu as its next Chairman from January 2027, while Engr. Effiong Okon steps in as Chief Executive Officer on 1 August 2026, as reported by cbinewstv.
The announcement, filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday and signed by Company Secretary Edith Onwuchekwa, marks a major leadership shift as Seplat gears up for its next growth phase.
Elumelu’s appointment follows Heirs Energies’ landmark $500 million deal to acquire a 20.07% stake in Seplat — making Heirs Energies the company’s single largest shareholder.
He’ll take over from Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, with Seplat calling it “a new chapter of leadership” for the firm. And if you know Elumelu, you’ll know why Seplat’s excited.
He’s the man behind Heirs Holdings, chairs Transcorp Group and United Bank for Africa, and is the champion of Africapitalism — the idea that long-term private investment can transform Africa’s economy.
Seplat says his experience in corporate governance and institution building will help drive its ambition to become a “resilient and globally competitive” energy business. As for the CEO role, Effiong Okon is taking the reins from Roger Brown, who’s been in charge since August 2020. Okon isn’t new to Seplat — he’s got 35+ years in the industry and joined the company in 2018. He’s been Operations Director, New Energy Director, and most recently MD of ANOH Gas Processing Company, where he helped deliver first gas in January 2026.
Seplat reckons his deep operational know-how and understanding of the business make him the right pick to lead its expanding energy portfolio. All told, it’s a double power move: Elumelu’s boardroom clout meets Okon’s on-the-ground expertise. 2027 could be a big year for Seplat.
