What a finish at Wembley! Semi Ajayi’s Hull City are back in the Premier League after a dramatic stoppage-time winner sealed promotion and ended weeks of Championship play-off controversy.
Hull City are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017 — and they did it in dramatic style!
According to cbinewstv, Oli McBurnie fired home a late winner as Hull edged Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley. The decisive goal came after a costly error from Boro goalkeeper Sol Brynn, sending Hull fans into wild celebrations.
The victory completes an incredible turnaround for the Tigers, who only escaped relegation to League One last season on goal difference. Now, they’re heading back to England’s top flight — with promotion reportedly worth at least £205 million over the next three years.
The final also brought an end to the ‘spygate’ controversy that rocked the play-offs after Southampton were kicked out for allegedly filming Middlesbrough’s training sessions before their semi-final clash.
Hull owner Acun Ilicali had even threatened legal action if the Tigers failed to gain promotion after the drama surrounding the competition.
Sergej Jakirovic’s men also made history by becoming the first sixth-placed side since Blackpool in 2010 to win promotion through the Championship play-offs.
