Police say personnel deployed across the two local government areas to prevent any breakdown of law and order...
Rivers Police have announced a restriction of movement ahead of Saturday’s bye-election in Ahoada East and Khana State House of Assembly constituencies, citing the need to ensure a peaceful and credible poll.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Rivers State Police Command said movement within and around Ahoada East and Khana Local Government Areas would be restricted from 12.00am to 6 pm on Feb. 21.
The police said security personnel would be massively deployed across the two local government areas to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to safeguard lives and property before, during and after the election.
Officers will be stationed at strategic locations, polling units and major roads to deter violence, electoral malpractice and other criminal activities capable of disrupting the process, the statement said.
Residents were advised to comply strictly with the restriction order, avoid unnecessary gatherings around polling units, refrain from carrying weapons or suspicious items and report any suspicious movements or activities.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to shun violence and adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws.
He warned that anyone found violating the restriction order or engaging in acts capable of disrupting the peace would be arrested and prosecuted.
The police also called on parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against being used to foment violence or disorder during the election.
Police said they remain committed to providing a secure environment for eligible voters to exercise their civic rights without fear or intimidation.
