Former presidential aspirant Peter Obi has stepped into fresh diplomatic talks in South Africa as concerns grow over xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other African foreigners.
Peter Obi has intensified efforts to address xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, holding high-level meetings with key South African ministers and political party leaders, cbinewstv reports.
Obi revealed the development in a Facebook post on Saturday after meeting with Nigerians in Cape Town. According to him, the discussions focused on immigration challenges, youth unemployment, security concerns and the growing tension faced by African foreigners living in South Africa.
The former presidential aspirant met with South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Leon Schreiber; Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa; and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie.
Obi described the meetings as “productive and candid”, stressing that both Nigeria and South Africa must strengthen dialogue and promote peaceful coexistence built on justice, mutual respect and the rule of law.
He also called on leaders and citizens across Africa to reject violence, avoid hate-driven actions and support democratic processes in resolving grievances.
According to Obi, Africa’s progress depends on unity, economic inclusion and protecting the dignity of every African, regardless of where they live.
