A major diplomatic gesture from Morocco as King Mohammed VI grants pardon to Senegalese football supporters jailed after the chaotic 2025 AFCON final in Rabat.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has pardoned the Senegalese football fans jailed following the violence that broke out during the 2025 AFCON final in Rabat, according to reports monitored by cbinewstv.
In a statement released by the royal court on Saturday, the pardon was granted on “humanitarian grounds” and in recognition of the long-standing brotherly relationship between Morocco and Senegal ahead of the Eid al-Adha celebrations.
The drama dates back to the AFCON final on January 18, where Senegal initially secured a 1-0 victory in a tense and chaotic encounter. However, the result was later overturned in favour of host nation Morocco after an appeal.
Trouble erupted after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty shortly after Senegal had a goal ruled out. Angry Senegalese supporters reportedly attempted to invade the pitch and threw objects onto the field.
Eighteen Senegalese fans were later sentenced by Moroccan courts to prison terms ranging from three months to one year. Three supporters had already completed their sentences and were released in April, while the remaining 15 are now expected to regain their freedom following the royal pardon.
Lawyer Patrick Kabou, who represented several of the supporters, told AFP the fans were expected to be released late Saturday.
Authorities say evidence used in court included stadium surveillance footage and medical reports from injured police officers and stewards. Damage caused during the unrest was estimated at over €370,000.
Meanwhile, Senegal’s football federation is still contesting CAF’s controversial decision to officially award the 2025 AFCON title to Morocco, with an appeal already lodged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
