The public has been advised to report credible information through official channels rather than social media speculation..
The Lagos State Government has urged residents to refrain from spreading unverified allegations following a viral TikTok video accusing a man of sexual assault.
In an official statement issued on Thursday, the state cautioned against making baseless or exaggerated claims that could mislead the public, prejudice ongoing investigations, or cause unjust harm to individuals.
Authorities emphasised that while sexual violence cases are treated with utmost seriousness, due process must be followed, and only verified facts from competent investigative bodies should be disseminated.
CBI News reports that the warning comes amid growing online outrage over the circulating video, which has sparked widespread debate and calls for justice. Officials reiterated the state's zero-tolerance policy on sexual and gender-based violence but stressed the importance of responsible reporting to avoid defamation or interference with legal proceedings.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) and relevant security agencies are reportedly handling the matter, with investigations ongoing.
