Thousands of vulnerable residents in Kano State, including prison inmates and people living with HIV and hypertension, are now benefiting from the state’s healthcare insurance scheme.
The Kano State Government is expanding access to healthcare by enrolling vulnerable groups, including inmates, people living with HIV and hypertensive patients, into the state’s health insurance scheme.
The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, Dr Rahila Aliyu-Mukhtar, disclosed this during an interview in Kano.
According to her, more than 6,000 hypertensive patients across the state have already been enrolled to help them access medical tests and treatment they may not have been able to afford on their own.
She said the intervention is already making a difference, noting that Kano has recorded a reduction in complications linked to hypertension.
Dr Aliyu-Mukhtar also revealed that over 6,000 people living with HIV have been captured under the scheme. She explained that while antiretroviral drugs are often supported by donors, many patients still need treatment for other illnesses such as malaria, diabetes, typhoid and hypertension.
The agency is also preparing to enroll another 6,000 tuberculosis patients to ensure they receive broader healthcare support beyond TB medication.
In a move described as the first of its kind in Nigeria, the agency has also enrolled all inmates in correctional centres across Kano State into the healthcare insurance programme.
According to Dr Aliyu-Mukhtar, the initiative earned commendation from the Controller-General of Corrections, while several other states have reportedly shown interest in studying Kano’s healthcare model.
As reported by cbinewstv, the Kano State Government says the programme is part of ongoing efforts to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and improve healthcare access for vulnerable residents across the state.
