Imagine looking out your window and seeing a bear wandering down your high street. That’s exactly what happened in Utsunomiya this week.
So, get this — a whole Japanese city has been on edge for four days because a bear was just casually roaming the streets. Schools shut, helicopters in the air, families peeking through curtains. Proper chaos, according to cbinews.tv.
The drama kicked off in Utsunomiya, just north of Tokyo. People spotted the bear everywhere: a shopping arcade, a university campus, even a wholesale market. Not exactly where you’d expect to bump into wildlife.
Cbinews.tv reports that dozens of police officers, hunters and city officials ended up surrounding a private home on Tuesday after the bear was seen there. An AFP photographer on the scene watched as they landed a tranquiliser shot and finally nabbed it.
There are photos from AFP showing the very sleepy, sedated bear being loaded onto a truck. End of saga.
One local, Issei Okabe, 37, lives right next door to where it was caught. He told AFP he was “so relieved”. And fair enough — his kid goes to the primary school nearby.
“My kid goes to the primary school nearby… and news reports said a bear appeared around there,” he said. “Then I watched the news, and our house was shown in the footage… I was so surprised. This is the first time I heard of a wild bear in Utsunomiya.”
The bear caused all 94 public primary and middle schools in the city to close on Monday and Tuesday. That’s how seriously they took it.
Glad everyone’s safe and the bear’s been caught. Wild few days for Utsunomiya.
