It’s been chaos in southern Philippines since a monster quake rocked Mindanao on 9 June — and the aftershocks just won’t quit.
A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao on 9 June, and the Philippines is still reeling, according to cbinews.tv.
So far, at least 41 people have lost their lives and more than 450 are injured. Thousands have been forced out of their homes, and honestly, the scenes coming out of General Santos City are heartbreaking. Locals have been picking through what’s left of damaged houses and apartment blocks, trying to salvage whatever they can while engineers check which buildings are still safe. Spoiler: a lot aren’t. Cracked walls, partial collapses, and structures looking dangerously unstable everywhere you turn.
It doesn’t stop there. Roads are wrecked, public buildings have taken a hit, utilities are down, and power outages have rolled across southern Mindanao. Over in Sarangani, staff at a provincial hospital even had to move patients outside — just in case the aftershocks brought the building down.
And those aftershocks? Relentless. Authorities have logged more than 450 tremors since the main quake, with several hitting 6.5 to 6.7 magnitude. That’s made rescue work painfully slow and getting to some communities nearly impossible.
Witnesses described absolute mayhem — walls caving in, floors splitting open, and even water and mud bubbling up from the ground. Some property owners reckon buildings near fault lines might have to be torn down entirely because the soil underneath has turned unstable.
To make things worse, this all kicked off on the first day of the new school term. Around 3.2 million students across Mindanao are affected, with more than 6,200 public and private schools suspending classes after damage to facilities.
Right now, relief teams and local authorities are flat out trying to sort shelter, medical help, and damage assessments. Four people are still missing, and officials are warning it’s going to be a long recovery for communities across the southern Philippines.
